Answers to the questions we are asked most often about RK-FINFA.
General
RK-FINFA stands for the Rural Kenya Financial Inclusion Facility. It is a six-year (2022–2028) development project financed by the Government of Kenya (GoK) and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). The project supports the transformation of the rural and smallholder agriculture sector through private sector-led development by improving the access of smallholder farmers and rural micro, small and medium-sized enterprises to appropriate financial services.
You can reach the Project Management Unit at Re-insurance Plaza, 7th Floor, Taifa Road, Nairobi, P.O. Box 30007-00100. Telephone +254 20 322 5000 or +254 20 273 2080, or email rkfinfa@treasury.go.ke. You may also use the enquiry form on the Contact page.
Accessing finance
RK-FINFA does not lend directly to individuals. Financing reaches beneficiaries through Participating Financial Institutions (PFIs) – commercial banks, microfinance banks and DT-SACCOs – using the Rural Credit Guarantee Scheme and the Green Financing Facility. Smallholder farmers and MSMEs should approach a participating financial institution and reference the RK-FINFA supported products.
The project is expected to benefit 190,000 rural Kenyan households. Direct beneficiaries are 66,000 economically active smallholder households and 2,000 rural MSMEs, with targets of at least 50 per cent women and 30 per cent youth participation.
Coverage will be nationwide once fully operational. The entry-point counties are Bungoma, Busia, Embu, Kakamega, Kirinyaga, Kisii, Machakos, Meru, Nakuru, Nandi, Nyeri, Siaya, Tharaka Nithi and Trans-Nzoia.
Green financing
Green finance is the financing of activities that address climate change and other environmental challenges, such as natural resource conservation, biodiversity conservation, and pollution prevention and control. The GFF taxonomy helps financial actors determine which investments can be labelled “green”.
